Rose Petal & Honey Salt Scrub with Grapefruit
1 cup fine unrefined salt
1 tablespoon raw honey
1/2 cup fresh rose petals
1/4 cup oil of your choice (I used coconut oil for this recipe)
10 to 15 drops essential oil -optional- (I used grapefruit)
Place the salt in a medium size bowl. With a mortar and pestle, grind the rose petals into a paste. Add the rose petal paste to the bowl of salt and mix. Doesn’t it smell lovely already? Add the honey, coconut oil, and grapefruit essential oil. Mix well and store in a 250ml jar.
This scrub has the soft scent of coconut, sweet rose, and bright grapefruit. If you don’t want the coconut scent you can use a light flavoured oil like grape seed oil. There are countless ways to make a body scrub and many different ingredients you can use.
For a ‘scrub’ you can use sugar or salt but they have slightly different characteristics. Sugar tends to be less abrasive and better for sensitive skin. Unrefined organic cane sugar has calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium, which help replenish your skin. And sugar doesn’t sting like a salt does, if you have any cuts or scratches, or have recently shaved.
Salt scrubs work the same way that sugar scrubs do by removing dead skin cells, but salt scrubs have the added bonus that salt helps to pull toxins from the body and can also ease inflammation. I like use fine, unrefined salt.
I’ll be hosting ‘salt and sugar scrub’ workshops this summer if you’d like to make some with me. We’ll be using fresh flowers and herbs from my garden and enjoying tasty snacks and drinks while we’re working. Keep an eye on our workshop and social page for dates.
